It’s Fall Y’all! Prepare Your Home For The Winter Ahead
Fall, 2025
You’ve just about made it through the dog days of summer and the smell of fall is finally in the air. This is a great time to pause and make sure you are doing your part to prepare your house for the winter months ahead. Please take a couple of minutes to read through the tips below and take the action necessary to protect yourself, your property and your home during the winter months ahead.
Change Furnace Filters
Changing your furnace filter regularly ensures the air in your home will remain clear of dust and other contaminants.
If you don’t change your filter, it will fill up and not be able to trap new particles. A full filter will not be able to prevent additional dirt and debris from circulating through your home, causing your family to breathe more dust and allergens on a daily basis. Additionally, a full furnace filter causes the motor on your furnace/hvac system to have to work harder, and it will subsequently become less efficient, resulting in higher than necessary utility bills during the winter months.
If you are unable or just do not have the time to change your furnace filter, no problem. Just give us a call and we will be happy to stop by and replace your filter at no cost.
Test Smoke and CO2 Detectors
It’s fall candle season finally and it’s time to check those smoke detectors again.
Smoke detectors may be some of the most important items in your home when it comes to your family and friends’ safety. These early warning devices may help alert your family and friends to fire and dangerous smoke while there is still time to evacuate, but they need to be periodically tested to help ensure proper function.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year. A good way to remember to do this is to change your batteries when you change your clocks for daylight saving time.
Rake Leaves
While the bulk of the mowing season is behind you, your lawn labor isn’t over quite yet.
The trees that make our neighborhoods so beautiful are beginning to shed their leaves for winter and that can mean a mess for your yard. Be sure to take advantage of a nice fall weekend and rake leaves that may have accumulated on your lawn and in your landscaping. Leaves that are left on the ground during the wet and snowy winter can inhibit grass growth in the spring. Be sure to use a lightweight rake and gloves to make the job easy and comfortable.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts
In late fall, after most of your leaves have fallen, it’s important to clean out your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters and downspouts can’t properly gather and shed water during heavy rains. This can lead to a number of issues including pooling water that can result in roof, siding and foundation damage.
If you’re not comfortable taking this project on yourself, just give us a call and we will take care of this task for you at no cost.
Inspect and Clean Dryer Exhaust Vents
You should get into a habit of cleaning out your dryer vent regularly, however, fall is a particularly important time of year to check this off your list. Cool, dry fall weather increases static electricity, turning your dryer vent into a major fire hazard. Additionally, a clogged dryer vent can drive up those utility bills by making your dryer work harder than it should. Keep you and your family safe and save a few dollars by checking his fall task off of your list.
These simple tasks can help to ensure that your house is prepared for the winter months ahead.
