Spring Cleaning and So Much More

Spring, 2025

While April showers bring May flowers, March is the time to get your home ready for the summer months that are right around the corner. Please take a couple of minutes to read through the five simple tips below and take the action necessary to make sure your house is ready for summer fun.

Prep Your Lawn For the Growing Season

Leaves left on the lawn over winter can impede growth in the summer. Rake the lawn to remove any branches, debris and leaves that you might have missed in the fall. Identify any dead patches and apply a light layer of soil then add grass seed and straw. You should see germination in just a couple of weeks. For a thick and green lawn, apply a weed and feed fertilizer to control weeds and promote grass growth.

Decluter and Deep Clean

With spring home cleaning comes decluttering your house and garage and getting rid of items that you no longer use or need. This is a home maintenance tip for spring that can also help contribute to overall home improvement. Decluttering interior spaces will not only revitalize your home environment, but it will also allow for better home air circulation. Move furniture, rugs, or appliances that are blocking air vents. If you have old home décor pieces you no longer need or have room for, now is the perfect time to let them go.

Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Taking time to remove leaves and debris from your gutters and downspouts will keep water from spring and summer rains flowing off of your roof and away from your house properly. Gutters weighted down with wet and heavy leaves can succumb to the weight and pull away from the house causing damage to the gutters and the house. This job is no fun but water backup and roof leaks are even less fun. This task is an essential spring chore.

Test Smoke and CO2 Detectors

Smoke detectors and fire alarms may be some of the most important items in your home when it comes to your family and friends’ safety. These early warning devices may help alert your family and friends to fire and dangerous smoke while there is still time to evacuate, but they need to be periodically tested to help ensure proper function.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year. A good way to remember to do this is to change your batteries when you change your clocks for daylight saving time.

Change Furnace Filters

Changing your furnace filter regularly ensures the air in your home will remain clear of dust and other contaminants. If you don’t change your filter, it will fill up and not be able to trap new particles. A full filter will not be able to prevent additional dirt and debris from circulating through your home, causing your family to breathe more dust and allergens on a daily basis. Additionally, a full furnace filter causes the motor on your furnace/hvac system to have to work harder, and it will subsequently become less efficient, resulting in higher than necessary utility bills during the winter months.

If you are unable or just do not have the time to change your furnace filter, no problem.  Just contact us at 417-861-2393 and we will be happy to stop by and replace your filter at no cost.

Bonus Tip

Be sure to clean out your dryer filter between every load of laundry.  A dirty vent can be a major fire hazard and drive up those utility bills by making your dryer work harder than it should.
